Getting to know your instructor, Karl
Eager to learn more about the life of your instructors?
Karl, our course director in Bali, is ready to play Q&A with us.
When did you start diving and why?
On a trip when I was twelve, I learned that diving was synonymous with getting away from it all. Already excited by the discovery of the seabed through freediving with my brother, I wanted to learn more about the treasures the sea has to offer.
The silence, tranquility, and closeness to nature immediately made me feel at home.
Can you tell us about an interesting experience?
Of course, there are so many! The most striking is also probably the most unusual: keen on “macro,” I was studying a drop-off in search of small subjects for my divers to discover, when the incredible happened: those divers shook me so I turned around and came face to face with the first whale shark of my life. Unbelievable!
What’s your favorite species?
Pygmy seahorses! You really appreciate the full range of nature when you come across one, they’re so unique!
What are the advantages of living in Bali?
Bali offers an incredible mix of exoticism and modernity, with a very well-preserved culture. At the same time, it’s a place where you can experience countless activities in addition to diving: cinema, museums, exhibitions, temples, nature. A magical place blending paradisiacal landscapes with rich culture…
Why did you want to share your passion through teaching?
Passion was indeed my primary motive. Nevertheless, worried about the impact of human beings on our planet, I wanted to change mentalities in my own way: by raising awareness. Raising awareness among divers about our environmental impact is part of my daily life. Now more than ever, it’s important for everyone to be environmentally conscious and take action to conserve our beautiful planet and its multitude of underwater species.
What advice would you give to our future professionals?
Travel! Try to gain as much professional diving experience as possible, enrich your knowledge of languages and above all, keep the passion alive by diving for pleasure, and sharing it with future students.
